One of the most profitable agri-business is
mushroom farming, which can be started with less space and low investment.
Uttar Pradesh in India is the leading producer of mushrooms followed by Tripura
and Kerala. In this, we will cover how to grow button mushrooms.
The export business of mushrooms is also very
profitable. These mushrooms are filled with nutritional and medicinal
properties and need little land or space to grow. Mushrooms have a tendency of
growing which is opposite to our green plants. It grows without sunlight, needs
no fertile soil, and feeds on organic matter.
Ways of growing Button Mushroom
Compost
making
The first step is to make compost on the clean and raised platform made of concrete. It should be left open and covered from the top to prevent rainwater. There are two ways of preparing compost- natural and synthetic ways.
Putting
compost in trays
The compost is then filled in the soft wooden
tray. While filling the compost should not be very dry or very wet, and it
should be filled to the edge and leveled on the surface.
Spawning
of mushroom
Spawning is the process of sowing the mushroom
mycelium in the trays. You can get the spawns from the certified national
Laboratories at nominal rates. There are two ways of spawning, one is to
scatter on the bed surface, and the other is mixing it with the compost before
filling the trays and covering it with paper, and sprinkling water on it, to
allow humidity and moisture to build in it.
Casing
of mushroom
Casing soil is mixed with a crushed and sieved
rotten cow in the garden soil. Then it is sterilized to kill the pests,
insects, nematodes, and other molds. After casing the soil, the temperature is
maintained at 25-degree celsius for 72 hours, and then it is dropped to
18-degree Celsius, in this fresh air, is mandatory, so there should be proper
ventilation.
Cropping
of mushroom
The pinheads start becoming noticeable after
15 - 20 days and the small-sized buttons of mushrooms start developing in 5 -
6 days. Once the caps are placed tight on the short stem, and the mushrooms are
ready to be harvested.
Harvesting
of mushroom
The cap is twisted off gently by pressing the
mushroom against the soil. It helps in chopping off the mycelial threads and
soil particles.
